Becoming a stay at home mom can be a little scary but making a little income at home shouldn’t be one of them. There are many ways to make money as a stay at home mom. It can be a great way to balance family life and work. I put together a list of great ways to make an income especially if you are looking for a way at making a passive income.
Make Money as a Stay At Home Mom
I decided to stay home with my kids when we had twins. I was a kindergarten teacher and it was hard for me to just not teach or provide an income for our family. I have tried a few different things and the things I am going to share have been the best when I had 3 little kids running around.
Start a Blog
This can be a scary step but think about something you are passionate about and all the things you can share about that. Through your blog, you can set it up to be monetized and earn money from people coming to your site. I started blogging in 2012. I still don’t know it all but have learned a lot along the way. If you need a quick outline on blogging, I suggest this free course by Madeline from Cappuccino and Fashion. It gives you a great overview of each step on blogging. From picking your niche, setting up your blog, and extra helpful tips along the way. If you want to go all in and get a deeper dive into blogging, I suggest her blogging secrets ebook. She has so many tips and helps you every step of the way. I found it really helpful when I used it.
Affiliates
Affiliate links are a great passive income stream because they can generate a steady income with minimal effort. With affiliate links, you can earn commissions simply by referring people to products or services that you believe in. This can be done through your website, blog, or social media channels. As long as you continue to refer people to these products or services, you can continue to make money. The best thing about this is that you usually are referring people to products and services you already use and love. Here are a few of my favorites:
Amazon: Earn a percentage by sharing links to your favorite products
Rakuten: I use this as an extension on my computer to get coupons, find deals, etc. You can earn from people signing up AND you save money while shopping online, too!
Shareasale: This is a website where companies offer affiliate links for their products. You can search for your favorite companies, apply to be a part of their program, then get personalized links to share.
Making and Selling Products Online
Do you like to craft? Can you create digital products through Canva? There are so many things you can create and sell. I am going to talk about two ideas, but you know your expertise so apply it to what you do!
Etsy: An online marketplace where you can sell homemade, digital, or print-on-demand products. If you don’t have the funds to make all your products on your own, look into print-on-demand sites like Printify. You will create the product and Printify will print and ship your product.
Teachers Pay Teachers (TpT): This is for teachers (obviously) to sell their worksheets or digital resources to other educators. Authors create their products and then post them in their store. Other educators buy their products to use in their classroom or at home.
Reselling
This one is becoming more popular with the ease of Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, and Poshmark. Have you ever gone to a garage sale and found the perfect item at an amazing price? Have you ever tried to resell it for a profit? This one takes a little more work because you are trying to find products to resell, but once you start finding your niche you will find easy ways to get products to resell. For example, Goodwill by me sells all their hardcover and paperback books for $2. I have found some really popular books and sold them for $5-$10 on Ebay or Facebook Marketplace! Being a stay at home mom gives you a little more flexibility for this option.
Freelance Work
There are websites like Upwork and Fiverr that allow people to sell their services to other businesses. For example, if you are really great at making digital art, you could sell your services to other businesses and make their business logo or create business cards for them. Other services that people post are copy editors, web design, Shopify, legal, and more. This is also a great spot to find help for setting up your blog.
Being able to stay home with your kids is such an amazing opportunity and most of these ideas will allow you to work while they nap so you aren’t missing out on anything. I just love that there is a way to make money as a stay at home mom.
