Learning Letter Sounds in Kindergarten

To help your child master letter sounds, it’s important to start with the basics of letter recognition. This means teaching your child how to identify each letter of the alphabet and differentiate between them. By focusing on the visual aspect of the letters and helping your child associate each one with a specific sound, you’re laying a solid foundation for phonics success.

Letter Sound Worksheets

Letter sounds can be taught when learning letter names, so once you start with letter recognition feel free to start with letter sounds. Using letter sound worksheets can be a great review of the letters you have learned!

Letter Sounds Worksheets for Letter of the Week

If you are focusing on a single letter, the worksheet above would be perfect! Each letter has a handful of objects inside. There are a few that start with that letter and a few that do not. Your child will say the object then color the object that matches the bigger letter. Some of the vowels include long and short vowel objects, as well.

Fine Motor Letter Sound Worksheets

I always like to add in a little extra fine motor. With this kindergarten worksheet, your kindergartner will cut out the letters and match them to the object that starts with that letter. If you wanted to add an extra step, your kids could write the letter next to the object then cut out the letters and match. This is a great strategy for kids just starting to identify letter sounds. You can work with them to write the letter, then they can cut and glue the letters in.

Mixed Review Worksheets

These worksheets are great when you are reviewing all the letter sounds. Each worksheet has several letters that will give your kindergartner a chance to practice more than one letter. They also vary between coloring and writing.
